Women’s Equality Day is right around the corner! With this big day only four days away, here are some amazing movies you can watch this weekend to amp up your girl power! All of the films below have strong themes of feminism, women’s equality, and women breaking gender stereotypes. Enjoy!

1. Hidden Figures

This movie is about the great contributions of Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who worked at NASA’s Langley Laboratory. She was an African American and a woman, which, in the 1960s, automatically meant that she was treated as inferior. She was often ridiculed and ignored. People only started taking her seriously when they realized her extraordinary intelligence. This movie is a must for all aspiring women engineers, astronauts, and STEM professionals. It will show you real-life experiences of discrimination against and derogation of women.

2. Little Women

Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is a book that is well-loved and much-read all over the globe. It is a timeless classic that has captivated readers for generations, with its story of 4 girls (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy) in the Civil-War era. In a time when the expectations for women extended only as far as getting married and being a homemaker, these 4 girls grew into adulthood and tried to find their place in a world that has a low place for them. It’s so refreshing to see strong female leads of today play sweet and youthful characters that were created so long ago. Don’t miss it!

3. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

This Netflix-original film follows the journey of Gunjan Saxena, the first woman to fly in combat zones in the Indian Air Force (IAF). From her childhood, she dreamed of being a pilot, spending her every waking moment envisioning her success. Her father’s constant love and support pushed her to try out for the first-ever female batch of the IAF, and she was overjoyed when she was accepted into the program. However, she encountered a lot of sexism and discrimination at her base and camp during the Kargil War of 1999. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl was extremely inspiring and motivational and is sure to be so for generations to come.

4. Charlie’s Angels

Released in 2019, this movie portrays women as strong, independent and fearless, with female characters who work as secret agents for the Townsend Agency. The movie shows that women need not always rely on men to save the damsels in distress (and the world), and that it is possible for them to accomplish things and be strong, even if they are often underestimated by everyone around them. There may be a sequel coming up soon, so be on the lookout!

5. Suffragette

The Women’s Suffrage Movement in the United States is pretty well-known, as well as the women behind it. But what about the movement in England? Although women over 30 got the right to vote in 1918, it wasn’t until 1928 that the UK passed legislation that allowed men and women to vote on equal terms. Suffragette tells the story of the movement from the point of view of a working woman, Maud, who devoted her life to the Suffrage movement. Learn her story and struggles by watching this movie.

That’s all we have for this week! Have you seen any of these movies? What do you think of them? Would you like to hear more of this topic in the future? Let us know in the comments below, and we hope you have a wonderful Women’s Equality Day!
