There are many non-profit organizations out there started by some very inspirational people. These non-profit organizations below are not only started by women but have and are working on changing the world. Keep reading to find out about these organizations. Who knows, maybe you will be interested in joining one!

  1. Special Olympics

In the 1950s and early 1960s, Eunice Kennedy Shriver saw the mistreatment of people and children with intellectual disabilities and decided to take action. She invited youth with intellectual disabilities to a summer day camp in her own backyard, and the idea behind her efforts eventually grew into the Special Olympics movement. The organization provides year-round athletic training and competition that allows children and adults to find joy, develop confidence, and discover new strengths through the power of sport.

2. Camp Kesem

Millions of children live with a parent who has cancer. Camp Kesem, a nationwide community spearheaded by college student leaders, is supporting this often-neglected population through innovative, fun-filled programs. Iris Rave, herself a lifelong camper, started the first Camp Kesem chapter at Stanford University with four student leaders in 2000. They chose kesem, Hebrew for “magic,” because they sought to bring magic to families affected by cancer.

3. National Organization for Women

The National Organization for Women (NOW) is the largest feminist organization in the United States. In 1966, the Third National Conference of the Commission on the Status of Women gathered hundreds of representatives in Washington, D.C. Though the conference theme was “Targets for Action,” delegates were frustrated because they lacked the authority to pass a resolution to end sex-based discrimination in employment. As an alternative solution, Betty Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique, and 27 other women set up NOW, to establish women as equal partners of men in American society.

4. One Love Foundation

One Love Foundation was founded in 2010 by the family of Yeardley Love, a victim of domestic violence who was killed by her ex-boyfriend. Created in Love’s honor, the foundation seeks to end abusive relationships by educating individuals on the foundations of healthy relationships versus unhealthy relationships. Through campaigns, workshops, and fundraising events, One Love is working to change the conversation and educate the greater community one step at a time.

5. Women for Women International

Women for Women International was founded in 1993 by Zainab Salbi, an Iraqi- American entrepreneur and humanitarian. Salbi was compelled to establish the organization after witnessing the horrors of the infamous rape camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia during the Balkan wars. Women for Women International aims to help female survivors of war through a year-long program covering monetary, community, and educational support. The organization brings together classes of 25 women to learn about their rights, share their personal experiences, work together to build better communities, and more. After over 25 years of work, the organization has supported over 478,000 women in eight different countries suffering from the collateral effects of war.
